Night Rating

Should you wish to increase your range of flying skills, the Night Rating is the next step. For those students wishing to complete a Commercial Pilots Licence, this rating is the first of a number of pre-requisites. The ability to fly at night adds an additional dimension to the flights you wish to undertake. You are able to plan for a flight entirely at night. Or you may conclude a flight which is partly conducted at night.

Requirements for the issue of a Night Rating:

  • The applicant must hold a valid Private Pilots Licence (PPL)
  • The applicant will have completed a minimum of 10 hours Instrument Flight time, of which 5 hours may be accrued on an approved simulator.

  • A cross country flight of at least 150nm’s and two full stop landings at two separate airfields is required.
  • The applicant will complete a Night Rating flight test to the satisfaction of a Grade I or Grade II flight instructor.
  • A Night Rating application form is completed once the requirements have been met. The applicant will submit this together with the applicable fee to the SACAA, for inclusion in your licence.

Instrument Rating (IR)

The basic principles of Instrument flight would have been covered in the night rating. Additional training is however required to teach students about flying in inclement weather. This will include the regulations and laws governing when you may, and when may not contemplate take-offs and landings, the considerations required for your destination airfield, radio navigation aids and instrument holding procedures amongst others.

Requirements for the issue of an Instrument Rating:

  • The applicant must hold a valid Private Pilots Licence (PPL) with a night rating
  • The applicant must pass the SACAA examinations
  • The applicant must have completed 50 hours as Pilot in Command (PIC) on cross country flights
  • The applicant must hold a valid Class 1 medical certificate

  • Applicants must complete the required application form and pay the applicable fee to the SACAA.
